The perceptual load theory explains that when a task uses all available mental resources, the brain has no spare capacity to perceive or process irrelevant distractions. Conversely, low-demand tasks leave spare capacity that automatically processes distractions, leading to interruptions.
Resource Distribution
The brain possesses a fixed pool of attention that must be distributed across active inputs. When the primary task demands deep focus, the pool is fully depleted, which blocks out peripheral sights and sounds. This mechanism explains why an operator in a state of high concentration does not notice background noise.
Distraction Vulnerability
Tasks with low cognitive requirements are highly vulnerable to being derailed by external interruptions. Because the task does not exhaust the attentional pool, the remaining capacity is forced to process nearby stimuli. This explains why keeping an operator on simple, repetitive work often leads to frequent multitasking and mistakes.
Workplace Architecture
Structuring tasks to match cognitive capacity helps maintain focus. Complex tasks protect themselves from distraction, while simple ones require a highly controlled environment to prevent the mind from wandering. Design of the workspace must account for this asymmetry.
