The test for an asymmetric channel

Channel

Every conversation on the channel gets started by the same side. The person on the other end answers, helps, and goes back to waiting. Two different arrangements look exactly like that from outside, and both of them get called by one word.

The first one is a supply arrangement that never got stated. Somebody found the channel useful and keeps it open in one direction, and if it went quiet tomorrow that side would take a month to notice. The second one runs one way for a duller reason.

Two lives are shaped differently, one of them has more room in it that season, and the traffic follows the room.

Who calls first will not separate those two. How often will not either, and how often is what people reach for, because it is the thing you can see without having to think about it. A count of moves is evidence only where both sides hold the move.

On a channel where one side has the room and the other side has the need, the count is a report on the room, and nothing else. What decides how such an arrangement ends is not who moved more often either. It is what standing in it costs each side, month after month, and the side paying more is not reliably the side sending more.

I had it wrong from both ends of it, once as the one doing the reaching and once as the one doing the reading.

You can see the count, and the count is not evidence. So the question has to come off the present, where it cannot be answered, and go into the history, where it can. What is one-directional on a channel like this is not the messages anyway.

The one behaviour the history gets searched for has a word the record settled on. Conversion: somebody reads where you are without being told, and then moves on it, at a price to their own week. Put that on a channel and who called stops carrying information at all.

Leave it off and the direction of the traffic is the only thing left to read, which is how a person ends up running the rule for a stranger who wants something over a long relation.

History

An initiation count is easy to run and it settles nothing. One side does most of the starting. Laid out flat, that is all the count shows.

A friend of long standing had come to read the channel as extraction, and on the count there was nothing there to correct, because the count says what it says and no more. What it cannot reach is the reason, and the reason is the whole difference between a supply and the shape two lives took.

My position on it did not need working out, which surprised me, because most of what I hold now took years to arrive at. Even if the reading is true, the gift is one I am willing to give. It is not generosity and it is not a decision to be the bigger one in the thing.

When it went the other way, when something was actually wrong on my side, the movement came before I got around to asking, and I never had to lay the situation out first to make it happen. I am not keeping a count of that. I say it on purpose, and I say it knowing what a count would do, because the day a count starts is the day the whole thing converts into provision.

And still, without adding anything up, I know which of the two sides is larger. It is not mine. It has not been mine for a long time.

Knowing which side is larger is not the same as holding a figure.

So the rule I came out with, for a channel where the call only arrives when something is wrong on the other end. I went back through the record looking for a day when nothing was wrong on their side and everything was wrong on mine. If one came up, the pattern I had been quietly resenting was the shape two lives took and it was never about me.

If nothing came up, the pattern is not a shape. It is the arrangement.

The check needs no consent from the other end, no attention from them, no conversation about any of it. The history is already written.

What I was looking for was not whether somebody is good to me, but one day in the record where the movement came the other way before I asked for it.

Signal

I met Michael Spence’s condition on signs at the desk, inside an argument about why a spoken promise is worth nothing next to a signature, and it does the same work out here. A sign informs you only when it costs the two kinds of people different amounts. Equal price, no separation.

Run an initiation through it. Starting a conversation costs the same whether the person on the other end is holding you in mind or drawing on you: a message, a minute, nothing anybody has to give up to send it. So the count cannot sort them, and a hundred of them cannot either, because a hundred cheap signs are still cheap.

Now run a conversion through the same condition. Reading a state that was never stated takes attention pointed at you before there is any reason to point it, and then moving on it takes a piece of a week that had been given to something else. Expensive for the person who is drawing on you, ordinary for the person who is in something with you.

The condition is met on the one behaviour nobody counts, and failed on the one everybody does.

Which is the answer on who calls more. A tally of cheap moves is only a tally.

The frame all of this sits inside I take from Margaret Clark and Judson Mills, who spent decades pulling apart two rules people give under. Communal: what moves goes to the side that needs it, and nobody puts a name on it as owed. Exchange: what moves, moves against a specific thing, already had or promised for later.

Everything since has been built on that split, mostly on what happens when two people are giving under different rules and neither of them says which.

Their work puts conditions on a communal frame, and those conditions decide how an asymmetric channel should be read. Two of them are about history: the frame gets built over time out of what actually happened, not adopted in a week, and it runs in two directions or it is not the thing. The third is about behaviour, and it landed on me sideways.

People who want a communal relation going will work at not keeping track of what they put in, because the not-keeping is itself what says the relation is wanted. My refusal to hold a figure was never private and it was never neutral. It is a move, readable from the other end, and it can be read by somebody with no intention of running the same rule back.

Both sides not counting is a frame, and one side not counting is a supply.

The first two are conditions on a state that people treat as a feeling, and the feeling is available to one side alone. The man giving under communal rules can be inside the frame on his own, while the other end receives under no rule at all, and nothing in the warmth of it tells him. Clark and Mills have a name for where that goes: the exploitative relation, where one side draws whatever it can get and carries no sense of owing anything back or of having to meet anything at the other end.

Frame claimed on the way in, exchange never honoured on the way out. I had been through that more than once before I had a word for it.

Jones and Pittman, in 1982, sorted the moves a person makes to shape how somebody else takes them. Five of them, and the sorting has held:

• ingratiation, making yourself liked
• intimidation, making yourself feared
• self-promotion, making yourself look able
• exemplification, making yourself look worthy
• supplication, making yourself look unable

Supplication is the one that runs on these channels. A person puts on show what they cannot manage, and the show draws help out of anybody holding the rule that you do not walk away from somebody who cannot manage. Nothing gets asked for.

It is the item on that list that looks like no move at all, and it gets work done for free. What I keep from their finding is the part that stopped an argument I had been having with myself for years: the display does its work whether or not the state behind it is invented. It can be a real state, an accurate account of a genuinely bad situation, and still function as a move.

What it cost me to hold that was the sorting underneath it. I had been putting people into honest and dishonest for years, and the sorting runs on an axis the thing does not use.

The last piece is on my side and it took the longest to see. Put a state on my channel and I do not receive a state. I take it and I build a request out of it, with a task and a deadline and an owner attached, and the owner comes out as me.

The operation runs so fast that I never catch it working. And because I built the request, it carries my handwriting. Nothing in it reads as somebody else’s demand.

It reads as me seeing what is needed, and my own seeing goes through every check I have without stopping. I go through the record looking for who asked me for what, and the record comes back clean. Nobody asked.

What the three accounts gave me together was one instrument and one correction. The instrument is the check itself, and running it takes nothing out of me, because what it reads is history I already have. The correction was to my own reading, and that one was not free.

I sorted channels by volume for a long time, because volume arrives daily and history has to be gone back through on purpose, and sorting by volume put a long friendship under suspicion while two arrangements with nothing in them read as warm. Finding out the instrument was wrong opened every reading it had ever produced, the flattering ones included. Which leaves the thing I have not answered: how many of the readings I am carrying right now came off it before I knew, and what would tell me, short of going back through the whole record again.

License

Somewhere inside a long relation the frame gets adopted and the two sides stop measuring. You give when you have it, they give when they have it, and neither of you is tracking who is up. It is a good state and it is worth protecting.

It is also easy to put onto a channel that never earned it, and the putting does not need anybody to say a sentence.

Earned Frames and Installed Ones

Earned means the other side ran the conversion at least once, on their own, when it cost them something to do it. Installed means the frame arrived before the history did. Sometimes I put it there.

I decided the frame applied on that channel, behaved as though it did, and the other side went on taking what came, which is what anybody does when something keeps arriving and nothing is asked for. Sometimes it got put there from the other end, in the first weeks, by a state laid out early and laid out hard, and by the time I noticed I was inside a rule I had never agreed to run.

One check separates them, and the record calls it the license.

Has the other side ever read my state without being told, and moved on it. Answering well once I had explained does not reach it. Not been sorry afterwards.

Moved, before the asking, at a price to their own week. It is not a question about their character and I am not qualified to answer that one anyway. You are asking about inbound traffic, and inbound traffic either happened or it did not.

A smaller check runs before that one and it takes ten seconds. Whatever I am carrying for somebody, I go and find the sentence where they asked for it. I keep records, so this is a search and not a memory.

If the sentence is there, then somebody asked, and a thing somebody asked for takes terms on it, and everything I know how to do works. If there is no sentence anywhere in the record, then the job was written by me out of something they only put on show, and I have been paying for a transaction that never opened.

A demand on a function is not a reading of a state.

Where the Check Landed

Run it across a set of channels and they come apart into two kinds. On the earned kind the inbound conversions are there every time I go looking for them, and they were there long before I had a name for the thing I was looking at. On the installed kind nothing has ever come back the other way and nobody has ever stated what the arrangement is.

There is a harder version of the installed kind, and it shows itself when the arrangement gets asked for outright: a standing channel in one direction, wanted as a standing thing, with no exchange proposed on it. Asked for in the open like that, it is not a reading of anything. It is a function-demand, which is a specification for a service.

A display asks for nothing and so there is nothing in it to refuse. A specification can be refused.

More of my channels turned out to be running on a frame that got installed than on one that got earned, and on some of them I had done the installing. I decided nobody was counting, and nobody was, because only one side knew the frame was there at all. There was a tell available the whole time and I read it backwards.

Every time I got near stating a term on those channels the words came out of order, and it felt like a man putting conditions on somebody who is already down. I took that feeling as information about the situation. It was information about the frame.

The moment a term goes unsayable is the moment to go and check whether the frame was ever earned, because the flinch is the frame doing its work, and it works hardest where there is nothing under it.

The channel that reads as extraction on the count is the one where the frame was earned, and the arrangements that felt warm and mutual are the ones with nothing coming back. I could not see it from inside them, because from inside them I was busy being useful, and being useful feels close enough to being in something that a man can go years without checking.

Both directions of the error cost, and they do not cost the same thing. Run the frame with somebody who has never converted and you spend capacity holding a position that has never once held you, and you find out on the day you need it that there is nothing on the other end, and the capacity does not come back that year. Take the frame off somebody who has converted, because you counted who called this month and the count came out against them, and you have put a meter on the one channel that had actually held you.

The first error costs a year. The second one costs the thing you would have gone to when the year was over.
