Distribution of available work hours across competing commitments defines the boundary of a person’s production. This capacity allocation is the process of assigning finite energy or hours to specific tasks or roles within an arrangement. It governs the flow of effort and stops where the physical limits of the person in the seat are reached.
Resource Priority
Allocation decisions prioritize the most demanding seats at the expense of secondary ones. When the operator chooses to spend hours on one project, they lose the ability to give those same hours to a different partner or a personal task. This creates a zero sum environment where every addition to the load requires a subtraction elsewhere.
Operator Constraint
The person holding the seat must decide how to spend their limited attention. Capacity allocation becomes difficult when the count of hours is not tracked or when the cost of the work is ignored by the one doing it. It is the mechanism that prevents the operator from being everywhere at once.
Output Variance
Fluctuations in the quality of work often follow a failure in how hours are distributed. If too many seats are held, the available capacity allocation for each one drops, and the work suffers as the load exceeds the capacity. This depletion of energy leads to a higher cost for every subsequent act and eventually breaks the arrangement entirely.
When the operator cannot see the boundary of their own time, they lose the ability to promise anything to a partner with confidence.
