Meaning
Cognitive assessment is skewed when a single prominent characteristic of a person or entity dominates the overall evaluation. This bias is known as the halo effect, where positive financial results lead observers to assume that the capability, culture, and path are similarly excellent. When the performance of an entity drops, the very same actions that were once described as focused are re-evaluated as rigid.
This distortion occurs because the outcome colors the interpretation of the process.
Evaluation Bias
Descriptions of operators are frequently constructed after the results are already known. In this environment, the halo effect produces a record that is highly inaccurate but comforting to those who read it. Observers use the outcome to justify their belief in the operator’s capability.
Operating Risk
Risks multiply when operators rely on these post-hoc descriptions to build their own systems. Because the halo effect conceals the actual mechanics of success, the choices made by founders are often based on misattributed causes. Copying a celebrated culture may yield no result if the original success was driven by market position.
Detection Limit
Isolation of variables is necessary to separate true capability from the noise of performance. To counter the halo effect, an operator must measure the delta of performance against the market baseline. Only by examining choices made before outcomes are known can the true quality of a seat be seen.
