Meaning
Dedicated mental space represents the singular capacity of an individual to oversee one complex operational system. This unit of attention, known as a slot, is the primary resource a founder must manage when building a project. Unlike simple tasks, it holds an entire system, including its logic and the person attached to it.
The capacity of an operator is limited by the number of these units they can manage at once.
Allocation Cost
Filling one of these units of attention requires a permanent commitment of daily energy and focus. The founder cannot easily swap systems in and out of a slot without a high cognitive penalty. This cost is paid in hours of deep work and mental availability.
The operator must select which projects deserve this level of commitment, leaving others to be managed by the team.
System Load
Each system placed in a unit of attention carries its own weight and dependencies. If a system is poorly built, it will consume more of the slot’s capacity, leaving less room for other tasks. This load increases when the system relies on inconsistent people or manual processes.
The founder must simplify these systems to reduce the overall burden on their attention.
Boundary Limit
Human cognitive capacity is hard-wired, meaning that no operator can successfully manage more than four of these systems simultaneously. When a fifth is added, the quality of oversight across all of them drops. This threshold is absolute and cannot be expanded by working longer hours.
The only way to take on new work is to free up a slot by handing a system over to a partner. This handoff is a necessary design step for any system that wants to grow beyond the limits of its founder.
