The filter that reads cold
From outside, the edge of a filter reads as coldness, and for a long stretch I was afraid that coldness had come down to me whole and was simply what I am. The instrument did come down the line; nothing came down with it saying where to point it, and when I finally went and looked at where mine had been landing for years, the people standing outside the gate were never under it.

Filter
A person works out early how much of other people he can hold at one time, and then he goes and builds himself a space the size of it. He does it before he has any words for what he is doing, so the reason he gives for it afterwards is always too small for the thing. Mine was that I did not want to share.
That is a small reason and it held up.
Walking out of a full room is not getting away from anything. It is measuring. And the measurement is not of the room, it is of the person doing the walking, taken once and then built to.
The measuring did not stop.
Decades later I made the same move again, on another continent: a place picked to the size of how much of other people I can hold at one time. Nobody put that in me. For years I went looking for the damage that must have installed it, because a man who works on himself learns to read every trait as a scar, and a loud house is right there to hang it on.
It is constitution, the thing I arrived with, not a scar. The noise did not hand me the sensitivity. The sensitivity was already in the room when the noise came, and what the noise handed me is what got built on top of it, and that is a different object with a different history, and the two of them got confused in my head for most of my life.
What a sensitive person does in a loud house is build a filter, and building it takes no decision, so it is finished before anybody notices it starting. The filter sorts. A little of what comes at him gets through, most of it is held at the edge, and holding is cheap next to letting everything in and sorting afterwards.
The edge is the only part on show from outside. The term is filter, not wall and not shyness, and what the term changes is the question you would ask about a quiet person. Not how much he feels.
How much he lets arrive at once.

Gate
Behind the filter there is a gate, and behind the gate the person is not the one people describe.
There are hours I gave to people smaller than me that nobody had given to me, and I gave them anyway, which is how most of this goes. Touchy in private. Tender.
Nobody who has met me in a working room would put those words anywhere near me.
Nobody has guessed the inside from the outside, and I stopped waiting for that a long time ago.
It is not a complaint. It is what an edge is for.
What reads as cold at the edge is a reading of the edge. It says the sorting is running. It says nothing about the interior, and the interior is not a prize for standing there long enough, which is the part people get wrong in both directions.
The capacity is large and it has been spent. Most of it went to whoever was collapsing nearest, taken as a standing supply, with nothing coming back up the same channel. The gate does not make that supply smaller.
It decides where it goes.
Except in one condition, and this is the part I built nothing for. Somebody goes down within reach of me and the gate opens on its own. The terms of that opener, as far as I have been able to read them off it:
- proximity, and nothing beyond proximity
- a person failing inside that reach
- no request made, no claim stated, no terms discussed
- no way to decline once the first two are true
The sorting stops and the supply runs until it is finished. That opener is not mine. It was fitted late, in a stretch of years when somebody near me was always going down and the competent one in the room gets conscripted, and it has taken the larger share of everything that ever came out of me.
A gate with one opener the owner does not control is not a gate. It is an opening with somebody else’s hand on it.
A person does not get to set how much arrives at one time. He sets where it goes. Whoever else can open the gate is the one doing the setting, and that is the part to go and find first.

Inheritance
Under all of this sits the fear, and it took me years to put it into a sentence in front of another person: that the coldness is not a filter at all, that it came down to me from a parent whole and finished, and that it is simply what I am.

What Came Down The Line
The trait itself is not in dispute and I am not going to make it sound better than it is. Cornered, I go sharp. There is no volume in it.
I find the place in a person that gives first and I put something into it, and I am accurate, because reading people accurately is a thing I can do and it runs in both directions. I did not invent that move. It came down to me the way a language does, before there was any deciding in it.
The word I use for it now is the instrument, because that is nearer to what it is than anything I was handed for it. An instrument has no temperament. It has a user, and a direction, and neither of those arrives in the box.
So when I say I did not want to be that, I am not talking about a family resemblance somebody once pointed out to me. I am talking about a move I have caught in my own mouth, with a person standing in front of me who had done nothing to earn it.

The Aim, Not The Acuity
The reading part has its own word and the word is acuity. It means one plain thing: locating that place in a person fast, usually inside a minute, usually without trying to. It is one of the few capabilities I would claim without hedging.
It is also blank. Finding is not using. The acuity that locates the place is the same acuity a person uses to walk around it, and it does not decide which of the two happens next; it hands over a location and stops.
Two people can carry it in the same size and leave opposite marks on everyone they meet. What separates them is not the size.
The instrument came down the line, and nothing came down with it that says where to point.
I aim mine away. I find the place and I do not press, including with people who had earned a press. The one time it landed as a weapon was enough.
The whole genre of remark went out with it, and nobody had to ask me for that. It hurt somebody. That is the part I cannot carry.
The rest is maintenance, and the maintenance is two moves. I catch the thing in my own mouth before it lands, most days. The days I do not catch it, I go back and put the plain word on what I did, and that second move costs every time, because saying it out loud means admitting I aimed.
Where I got the instrument from, that maintenance was not running and had never been fitted, and I want to be careful here, because that is the whole of the difference and it is also the only part of it that cannot be seen.
Which cuts at me too. From outside, my filter and the thing I was afraid of resembling look identical. Same short answers, same face in a room full of people.
What shows at the edge says nothing about what sits behind it, so anybody standing outside will read the two as one thing, most people do, and I have done it to others. The only evidence I ever had from inside was that I was worried about it, and worry is not evidence. I would not accept it in anything else I do, and I have thrown out other people’s work for less than that, without feeling bad about it.
So the question I kept turning over for a long time, and I did not have a clean answer for it: if the aim is the whole of the difference, and the aim cannot be seen from anywhere except inside, how is a person supposed to know which of the two he is?

Choice
I built a second thing, later, and it is a firewall. Two halves sealed off from each other, the part that thinks and the part that feels, kept apart so the feeling could not flood the function. Where somebody still has to work, that is decent engineering.
It let me be capable on days when there was nothing behind the capability. Then I kept it. Long after there was nothing left to survive I kept it running, because a thing that once saved the operation gets treated as protection forever, and nobody sends a note saying the emergency is finished.
That firewall is also why the question stayed open as long as it did. Anything aimed at me arrived on the sealed side, where it registered as information and never as a cost, so the meter that would have told me something was going on read zero for years while the thing ran daily.
The answer came at me from outside, from the one person I had said the fear to, and it arrived the wrong way round from how I had set the question up. I had been checking the wrong direction the whole time. The coldness is real.
The target is me. I did not take that on trust, because it was still somebody’s reading of me, and a reading is not evidence either. But it was checkable and the thing I had been hunting for was not.
Warmth is a feeling, and a feeling leaves nothing behind it. Aim leaves marks. So I stopped searching the interior and went and looked at where the instrument had actually landed, over years, and who had been standing under it.
It did not land on other people. It landed on me.
My own work sat last on every list, under everybody else’s, and for years I was building the page for other people while not having one of my own. The body got whatever was left after the load, which for long stretches was nothing, and I never put it on a list where anybody, me included, would have to look at it. A living space I would not have signed a client into, held for years and called fine.
The position at the back of the room, arranged so carefully that nobody had to look at me, followed by the complaint that nobody did. That is where it has been going the whole time, daily, unwatched, and I did not call it by its name for a very long time.
The coldness was real, and it had been pointing at me the entire time.
Once I was looking at position instead of at the instrument, the fear came apart from the other end as well. The one I was afraid of resembling stepped out of the middle of the arrangement and would not come back into it, and I stood in the space that left. I was the one holding a structure up from underneath, at an age when that is not the role a child is given.
That is not an echo of the withdrawal. It is the correction of it, decided by somebody far too young to know he was deciding anything, and then run for decades with no day off and no acknowledgement, including from me. I had spent the whole time checking my mouth for a resemblance and had never once checked where my feet were standing.
There is a cost inside that position and it is the one that explains the back of the room. Being looked at cost more than I had at that age. Being needed cost a great deal and I could pay that, and what it bought was a position nobody takes back off you.
So I took that one, and I have been paying for it ever since, in work. It works. It keeps working.
If the operation cannot run without you, then nobody has to want you there, and the question of whether anybody does never has to get asked out loud, which is convenient for a person who cannot stand to ask it.
A position nobody can take off you is not the same thing as being wanted in it.
So I built the room instead of standing in it. The place other people get looked at in, kept running by somebody nobody has to look at. Then I complained that nobody looked.
Those are not two facts about me. They are one arrangement doing exactly the job it was built for, and the thing I actually wanted could not come through it, because I had built it specifically to keep that kind of arrival out. The one position that could have settled the question was never equipped to issue anything, and every position that was equipped has been saying the opposite for years, in plain sentences, to my face, and I filed all of it under politeness.
That moves the position, and not gently. A trait that came down the line is not a fate; what gets chosen is the relationship to it, and I had chosen that relationship carefully in one direction and never once in the other. The supervision I run so hard on the way out was never running on the way in.
Whatever I do about it now is not a new capability I go and acquire. It is the move I already run on everybody else, run on the man at the back of the room. Find the place, step around it, and count him in.
None of that takes the acuity out. It is in me, it came from somewhere, and at this point I would not know what I was without the filter either. What I decide is who comes through the gate, how fast, where the sharp thing gets aimed, and whether I am on the list of people I am careful with.
I put myself on that list. Low down, and late, and I have not taken myself back off it.
