Meaning

An unspoken agreement establishes a hidden set of obligations that one partner expects another to fulfill without prior discussion. This unexpressed expectation is known as a covert contract, where one person performs a service in the belief that the other will automatically return the favour. The arrangement relies entirely on silent reciprocity rather than clear communication.

It ceases to apply once the expectations are spoken aloud and agreed upon by both parties in the room.

Unspoken Obligation

Friction occurs when the receiving party does not return the favour because they were never aware that an agreement existed. The person who holds the seat experiences a high cost in hours and energy, believing their unstated contributions will be rewarded. Because the terms are hidden, the other partner has no opportunity to consent or decline.

Hidden Agenda

A partner often creates these arrangements to avoid the discomfort of direct negotiation. By giving generously without asking, they attempt to secure future compliance or safety without risking rejection. This pattern of behavior leads to a private accounting of deeds that the other partner cannot see.

Relational Debt

Accumulated tension is the inevitable consequence of this unvoiced arrangement. When the expected reciprocity fails to appear, the silent giver experiences resentment and begins to withdraw cooperation. Speaking the terms openly is the only way to resolve the imaginary debt.
